The Maplehill School...

  • Creates a home-like, supportive atmosphere to help teen age students experience a sense of belonging that is built upon cooperation, responsibility, and self worth.
  • Blends experiential with traditional learning activities to encourage collaboration between students and teachers, ensuring curriculum offerings that are responsive and relevant to student needs.
  • Guides students to develop understanding and skill in group and one-on-one interpersonal processes.
  • Incorporates outings, overnight adventures, extensive farm-based learning, job training and community outreach to help students connect to expanding tiers of society.
  • Maintains approval by the State of Vermont Department of Education to provide Special and General Education services for adolescents and young adults from 7th through 12th grades.

Maplehill students are Vermonters, many of whom are referred by their local school in order to receive specialized services mandated by their Individual Education Plans. Most enroll to address patterns of behavior that are disruptive to their education. Often these behaviors are surface to underlying emotional issues as well as specific learning difficulties. Students who are successful at The Maplehill School tend to be more responsive to relationship-based intervention than behavior modification. The school is not appropriate for students who consistently express their emotions through physical aggression. Students work either to graduate from Maplehill or to gain re-entry into their local school. The Maplehill School also enrolls privately placed students who are seeking an alternative to the traditional high school experience. School enrollment may be up to 20 students.

The Maplehill faculty and staff form a collective of dedicated educators with the training, experience and certification needed to orchestrate the school’s multi-dimensional program. Visit here to learn more about them.

At Maplehill we value an honest process that respects each individual in the community. We all have a part to play in making the educational experience at The Maplehill School genuine and effective. Students who are in hard times often find comfort and a chance to start over with us.

Our small size makes it possible for a variety of students to address their needs and to be successful here. Students work with faculty to explore ways to weave experiential alternatives into the curriculum for traditional academic studies. We help students transition into larger, main stream settings or support them through to graduation from our program
