Outreach to Elders

During the mid 1990's, Elmhill began supporting community elders who might be vulnerable to economic and other hardships. Engaging students in the process, the Maplehill School began providing supplemental food to elders who are on a fixed income.

In the autumn of 2006, Elmhill established a working relationship with AmeriCorps. Having an AmeriCorps member volunteer to staff this outreach initiative has made it possible for Elmhill to increase its service to community elders. Involving students of Maplehill School as community service learning, Elmhill has established greater consistency in making monthly food drops, extending these to be a year-round event. Additionally, students now take part in weekly outings to the Twin Valley Senior Center at which they share food with elders, some of which they have prepared in culinary arts classes at school, as well as taking part in recreational activities.

We continue to explore and develop ways that we can expand our relationships with these elders of our community including plans to develop response activities to them at times when emergency support may be needed.
